Green Ambitions
Villa Loukia is trying to do what she can to reduce her carbon foot print and be as 'green' as she possibly can.
Her green credentials are as follows:
- Water for the villa is heated by the sun in a large 200 litre tank - sufficient for all the house needs.
- Electricity will be created by the Photovoltaic panels on the roof (subject to a permit being issued in March 2012) and the electricity will be put back into the national grid.
- Wherever possible, Villa Loukia has been fitted with low energy light bulbs
- In winter or low season there is an open fire that burns logs that have been harvested from Villa Loukia's own sustainable olive grove.
- The master bedroom at Villa Loukia has been built with double aspect french windows allowing a natural breeze to blow through the room at night. Unless there is a heat wave with very high temperatures, air conditioning is not necessary. The windows are all fitted with mosquito nets so that windows can be left open. Guests are encouraged to think before turning on the air conditioning unnecessarily and to turn it off before opening windows and doors. All bedrooms are fitted with ceiling fans which are more energy efficient that air-conditioning.
- Villa Loukia has been carefully built on the edge of its 1 acre olive grove so that the majority has been predominantly left in its original state, preserving its natural habitat thus allowing the flora and fauna and wildlife to continue its natural cycle unabated. Hopefully as the grove is not disturbed then this will increase biodiversity. The planting in the actual garden of the villa has encouraged many butterflies and a variety of insects.
- The local shepherd (Antonio) is still able to graze his sheep and goats on the land away from the house as it is not ring fenced. Particularly in spring and autumn when the grass is green he moves his flock up and down the hill through Villa Loukia's land as he has done for many years. The building of Villa Loukia has therefore not had a detrimental effect upon his ability to live with his livestock off the land. This of course does not in any way compromise Villa Loukia's privacy.
- The villa is in walking distance of Kassiopi so it is not essential to drive a car whilst on holiday for those who don't wish to drive. There are push bikes for hire in Kassiopi for those who are more adventurous.
- Kassiopi has an excellent public transport service with buses going daily both north and south to Corfu Town or there are many boat taxis working along the coast to different bays.
- It is encouraged that guests buy all their groceries locally. The fruit and vegetables in the local shops are mainly locally produced and there is a vegetable van that can be seen most days selling local produce door to door.
- Guests are encouraged to recycle their rubbish. There are recycling bins opposite Nikos Supermarket on the coast road.
- The toilets are all fitted with a low flush button to conserve water usage.
